Looking at Scottish Art

Art is about ideas and communication.

Because there is no ‘correct’ way to create art, it is full of variety, experiment and enjoyment. We can say virtually anything through art, and we can use almost anything, in all sorts of different ways, to say it.

Looking at Scottish Art explores the world of art through Scotland’s rich heritage, both past and present. It draws upon artists who live or work in Scotland to show how their art is made and to look at the sorts of things artists want to express about their surroundings, their feelings, about people, events or even dreams. Individual works in a wide variety of media are discussed to show us how we can look at, read and understand any work of art, whether it is from the past or being created today. This book also explains the traditional language we use to talk about art. Above all, it shows how we can enjoy art.

Looking at Scottish Art adds to BBC Education Scotland’s resources for the Expressive Arts.

The authors: Brian McGeoch and Steven Porch are teachers of art and, as part of the Museum Education Service of Strathclyde Regional Council Department of Education, work with children of all ages in museums and galleries around Glasgow.
