“The most commonplace object is a vessel, a vehicle for my thoughts.’ Picasso’s creativity throughout his career was seemingly boundless. Alongside his painting, drawing and sculpture he was forever experimenting and seeking new ways in which to express himself. Working with wood, clay, cardboard, paper and even bits of string, he transformed the most mundane things into marvellous shapes and forms, producing cut-out sculptures, masks, toys for his children, and a host of unconventional objects such as Head of a Bull made from the saddle and handlebars of an old bicycle.
Photographer Edward Quinn, a friend of the artist, had the good fortune to observe and share some of these moments of creation over a period of about twenty years. In this book he brings them back to life, describing Picasso at work in his studio, and painting an intimate portrait of the artist he calls the
‘man of ever-changing moods’. His words are accompanied by a series of specially taken photographs, providing a unique view of some of Picasso’s most extraordinary creations.
