This volume contains twelve brilliant new stories, all written in the two years following the completion of WAITING FOR WINTER. One of them, ‘A Few Trips and Some Poetry’, is a novel of medium length.
Mr O’Hara says in his foreword: “I am writing a strange play, and am well along with a long novel. But the writing of short stories is becoming an expensive luxury at my age… in energy and time they have become costly because the energy and time come out of resources that I must budget for the long novel”. It is possible, therefore, that a few years may have to go by before another book of O’Hara stories is ready for publication.
The quality of AND OTHER STORIES -which contains some of the author’s finest work – shows what a great amount of his energy and time has gone into it. But since in the first eight years of the 1960s he has already produced more and better work than most writers manage in a lifetime, it is clear that Mr O’Hara’s “budget” will not be too restrictive. As he said in an earlier foreword: “I have work to do, and I am afraid not to do it”.
