The Norwich School of Painting

By Marjorie Allthorpe-Guyton

$8.00

A Brief History of the Artists and Their Work.

In 1803 a group of Norwich painters founded the first regional Society of Artists in order to meet to exchange ideas and later, in 1805, to hold annual exhibitions of their work. The Norwich School of Painting developed from these early beginnings, to cover three generations of painters linked by friendship, family and master-pupil relationships. Its two great masters were John Crome and John Sel Cotman. The illustrations in this publication show the rich diversity of their subject matter and are just a small sample of the unrivalled collection of Norwich School paintings and drawings in the collection of Norwich Castle Museum & Art Gallery.
