Out of the Dark spans the history of Europe for 1000 years – from the fall of the Roman Empire to the fifteenth century.

It tells of the Romans, the Franks, the Saxons, the Normans, the Vikings; Byzantium, Christianity and Islam; and the Crusades. It details how ordinary and not so ordinary people lived in this extraordinary period of history. Peter Richards, who wrote the text, and Frank English, who drew the line illustrations, are both practising History teachers at Year 8 level. Their combination of lively text and uncluttered pictures helps to bring alive the Middle Ages for junior secondary students.
