The Great South Land: Treasures of the Mitchell and Dixson Libraries and Dixson Galleries

By Suzanne Mourot & Paulette Jones

$25.00

Within the walls of the Mitchell and Dixson Libraries and Dixson Galleries is housed a vast collection of treasures tracing the history of Australia from its initial discovery to the present day.

Priceless documents, artefacts, illustrations and photographs (including Captain James Cook’s gold Royal Society Medal, Matthew Flinders’ hand-written log of the Investigator, and Patrick White’s Nobel prize for literature) tell their own exciting story about a particular period, person or event in the unique development of the mysterious great South land.

The Great South Land, with over 100 colour and black & white reproductions, is the first illustrated work devoted entirely to the Library and designed to show the extensive range of these magnificent collections.

Suzanne Mourot joined the staff of the Mitchell Library in 1944 and has been its librarian since 1968.
She is particularly interested in early Australian history and pictorial records, and has had published numerous other works on these topics.
