Darwin, as a young man travelling among many: peoples, was aroused to the question of the origin and evolution of man, which he made the major issue of his day.

Similarly, forty years ago, Professor Darlington as a young man travelling among the peoples of the Ancient East, whose societies are so diverse and so different from our own, questioned the origin and evolution of those societies.
