Sodeisha: Avant-garde Japanese Ceramics

It gives me great pleasure to welcome this exhibition, Avant-Garde Japanese Ceramics, which will tour Australia from 1979 to 1981.

The Sodeisha Group, whose recent work is represented in this exhibition, introduced a new dimension to the Japanese ceramic tradition and exercised a strong influence on the development of Europe and America. Indirectly, this influence has come to Australia via the contemporary American ceramic movement. This exhibition will provide Australians with the first opportunity to see the vitality and innovation of the work of this group, which has played a significant role in the emergence of a new international ceramic awareness.
