About the Author: Peter A Tomory.
Born in Hong Kong, 1922, and educated in Scotland and England. Having served in the Royal Navy during World War II, he returned to the University of Edinburgh and subsequently held posts in the Art Galleries of York and Leicester and in the Arts Council of Great Britain. He was Director of the City Art Gallery, Auckland, New Zealand, for 9 years and later joined the academic staff of the University of Auckland. He is now Associate Professor in Art History, Columbia University, New York.
