This book is a product of the integrated efforts of an educational psychologist specialising in cognition and a reading education specialist.

MYLES I. FRIEDMAN is the Gambrell distinguished professor of education and chairman of the educational research. program at the University of South Carolina. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Chicago in educational psychology and research, and specialises in cognitive processes and learning.

He is the author of Rational Behaviour: An Explanation of Behaviour That Is Especially Human, numerous journal articles, and several tests. In addition, he is director of the Job Related Curriculum Project, a project aimed at making teacher education more job related.

MICHAEL D. ROWLS is an associate professor of reading education and director of the reading program at the University of South Carolina. He received his doctoral degree in reading education and instructional systems technology from Indiana University. His special areas of teaching and research interest include secondary reading, comprehension, and instructional design.

He is the co-author of Reading Achievement in the United States: Then and Now and co-authors the Annual Summary of the Reading Research Quarterly.
