A blazing hot day at the height of a Missouri summer.

Two men meet for the first time through the bars of a cell on Death Row. Steve Everett’s life is unravelling: Frank Beachum’s life is about to end. They re both running dangerously low on luck. Beachum was convicted of murder six years ago and sentenced to die by lethal injection. Everett is the reporter. Despised by his colleagues. unfaithful to his wife, he’s looking for a big story to get his life and career back on track.

And in the dwindling hours before midnight, the only hope they have is each other.

There are eighteen hours to go. In those hours, Frank Beachum is going to be pushed to the very limits of his faith and look over the edge into a nightmare.

And Steve Everett. in spite of himself, is going to risk everything, even his own life, in a breathless attempt to save him.
