Struggletown won the Victorian Premier’s Literary Award for Australian Studies (1985) and the Ernest Scott Prize from the University of Melbourne (1985).

Dr Janet McCalman is a Research Fellow in the Department of History at the University of Melbourne. In 1992 she was awarded the inaugural Max Crawford Medal by the Australian Academy of the Humanities for her scholarly achievement.
