Yokohama Past and Present

This book is issued in commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the incorporation of the city of Yokohama and the 130th anniversary of the Port of Yokohama. The book is particularly useful in its chapters on the “Early Days of the Port (1853-1867)” and “From Enlightenment to Urbanisation (1868-1899).

Since Yokohama was the hub of foreign activity in Japan during the 19th century and Meiji era, the book is an important resource on how the city and port developed and grew during that period. The book provides a wealth of information for that period as well as 20th century Yokohama.
