One of the basic attractions of archaeology is not so much that we can learn about the material aspects of our civilisation and its history, but that it presents ourselves and our very humanity to us from Man’s primitive beginnings.

It is no wonder that the subject should attract so much passionate research or that the picture should, as a result, change so rapidly. There is now a much broader measure of professional agreement among physical anthropologists, both as to classification and nomenclature of the fossil remains of early man and as to the most significant objectives for future research.
