Neil Matterson was born in Launceston, Tasmania, in 1951.

He came to Victoria in 1962 and had his first cartoon published in 1971 while obtaining an Associate Diploma of Art – Industrial Design at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology. Neil spent four years as staff “pocket” cartoonist on The Sun News-Pictorial, Melbourne, from 1975-79. At one time Neil was the daily editorial cartoonist for both The Sun and The Herald while filling in for the papers’ main cartoonists who were on holidays.
