Everything about the Greys was hearsay: from how the first Alec Grey had got the valley by trampling over others and had worked his wife to death, to how his rich sons were cannibals and would bury your bones on the knoll.

Nobody really knew what went on there – in that lush and secret fold – except in rumour and gossip and speculation. The Greys and their valley have so intrigued successive generations that if you are in the mountains and meet someone who knows the legend you will be taken to the valley and told this story.
