No one now denies that present-day education is beset with problems.

The great expansion in schooling that has taken place over the past twenty years or so has given few of the results that were promised. Instead of a bright new age, we are confronted with vandalism, violence, truancy and a curriculum no one believes in. There are many schools, particularly in big cities, where no one willingly teaches and where it is very unlikely that much that anyone would admit to be education is being carried on. In many countries of the Third World the educational system is a wildly inappropriate importation.
