After two poor harvests and heavy doctor’s bills because of an outbreak of scarlet fever, Pa Ingalls knows it is time to move from Minnesota. Laura is thrilled at the prospect of moving out West, but her mother is reluctant to go. When it seems that they must continue to endure their hardships indefinitely, help arrives from an unexpected quarter and the family find themselves heading for Silver Lake and a new life.
