In his view, Bonaparte’s campaigns were primarily expedients to serve his political ambition. He does not believe there was a ‘turning point’ in Bonaparte’s career after which his fortunes or abilities declined, but rather that there was a consistent pattern from the outset to the final catastrophe at Waterloo.
