Birds of Australia

Early settlers complained that there were no songbirds in Australia.

Yet we have a wealth of magnificent birds – many with distinctive calls which add special charm to the bush.

About 700 migratory species are native or regular migrants to Australia, and of these some 400 occur naturally only in this country. Some species, such as Lyrebirds and Cape Barren Geese, are quite unlike any group in other continents.

Our birds range from delicately hued Honeyeaters to brilliantly coloured parrots, from tiny weebills to the two-metre-high Emus.

The superb full colour photographs and the text present Australian birds in a wide range of natural habitats – from the coastline, rainforests, rainforests, high country and marshlands to the great inland.
