Anaïs Nin was born in Paris and spent her childhood in various parts of Europe. She underwent analysis for several years and became acquainted with a wide circle of artists and novelists. Her reputation grew slowly, but the publication of her Journals won her many admirers. In addition to her novels she wrote short stories and erotica. Anaïs Nin received an honorary doctorate from Philadelphia College of Art and was elected to the National Institute of Arts and Letters in 1974. She died in 1977.
