Janet Mansfield

Janet Mansfield is one of many Australian potters who have learnt much of their craft from the traditions of Japan, and who have attained a level of accomplishment which enables them to show their work in Tokyo.

Janet Mansfield has developed a maturity of style which reflects her long experience with salt glaze domestic stoneware, but which has not precluded accomplished work in raku and porcelain. She has won many awards, and has been invited to represent Australia in the United States. As editor of Pottery in Australia and as a contributor to other publications, she has done much to lead and form specialist knowledge and popular taste in Australia, and she has found time to teach and to encourage promising young potters to study in Japan.

I am delighted that this distinguished Australian potter has been invited by Green Gallery to exhibit her work in Tokyo, and I take this opportunity to wish both Janet Mansfield and Mr Shigenori Itoh every success. The Australian Embassy is pleased to be associated with this splendid example of cultural exchange with Japan.
