Writers’ Houses

Writers’ houses are places of both creation and inspiration, studios as much as homes. They are the most personal reflection of an author’s private – and often closed – world and their contents and style are just as often a revelation.

This beautifully designed and produced book takes the reader into the intimacy of the homes of twenty great international literary figures, from the simple tropical word of Ernest Hemingway in Key West to the remote Carmarthenshire boathouse of Dylan Thomas at Laugharne, in Wales, from William Faulkner’s antebellum mansion in Oxford, Mississippi, to the aristocratic Palermo palace of Guiseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa.

All these houses were specially photographed, often for the first time, by the distinguished American photographer Erica Lennard. In the accompanying text, Francesca Premoli-Droulers brilliantly links together the ties that bind writers, their books and their homes.
