They are mostly by nineteenth- and twentieth-century artists but range in time and style from French Court art of the early eighteenth-century to modern pop art. It is not an academic selection – it is concerned to capture the ‘immediacy’ of life drawing. As Mervyn Levy says, “Usually such drawings are made with no thought of public exhibition; they posses the intimacy, often the embarrassing and unguarded intimacy, of diary entries.”
