Successful manipulation of living organisms, whether harmful or beneficial, insects or not, depends on adequate biological understanding.

The object of this book is therefore to provide students and practising agriculturalists and horticulturalists with an up-to-date introduction to insects as living organisms and to the principles and practice of pest control. The treatment is introductory, but provides sufficient grounding for the basic concepts of modern pest control, in particular those of pest management, to be grasped. The foundation is also laid for further study in particular aspects for those who desire it.

In this edition the section on insect identification and classification has been revised to give details of species of economic importance in the UK and the text as a whole amended to include examples of important pest species and pest control practice in the UK.
