But this was the man who followed Maigret home to his flat (having haunted the office each Saturday morning for the past five weeks) to tell him: ‘I want to kill my wife’.
He was not drunk then.
What happened to Planchon the cuckold – the man who would not leave his unfaithful wife?
Maigret felt responsible. After all, it was he who had sent the little man away with: ‘Just phone in each day so that I know you haven’t done it yet’.
