John Updike was born in Pennsylvania. He published his first novel, A Poorhouse Fair, in 1959, after which came the first of his bestselling ‘Rabbit’ books, Rabbit, Run. Penguin publishes many of his poems, short stories and novels, including Collected Poems 1953-1993 and, most recently, Memories of the Ford Administration and Brazil. A new volume, The Afterlife and Other Stories, is forthcoming in Penguin.
