Cathedrals: A Hundred Jewels of European Architecture

All across Europe the towers, spires, lancets and arches of great cathedrals have stood proudly through the centuries – from Canterbury to Chartres and as far west as Batalha in Portugal; from Reims to Cologne and as far east as Prague.

One hundred of these wonderful buildings, the much-frequented as well as the hidden jewels, are presented here in words and pictures. The 268 illustrations, of which 143 are in colour, bring to life a period that stretches from the end of the Dark Ages, through Romanesque and High Gothic to the picturesque exuberance of Spanish and Austrian Baroque.
