An Early History of Cape Otway and King Island Lighthouses.
Donald Walker was born in Hobart but grew up in Melbourne. As a child he spent many hours at Point Lonsdale with his grandfather, watching ships negotiate the Rip and listening to stories of vessels of the past.
In 1970, while studying architecture at Melbourne University, he was able to revive this earlier interest as he researched the history of Victoria’s lighthouses. The scope of the work was eventually narrowed to Cape Otway, and later Gabo Island.
This book is largely drawn from this earlier work on Cape Otway.
Donald was a member of the Victorian Premiers Department History Advisory Council Sub-committee responsible for the statewide activities commemorating the centenary in 1978, of the wreck of the Loch Ard at Port Campbell.
He is a practising architect, and is married with two daughters.
Donald spends much of his spare time on the Otway coast; the setting of many events described in this book.
