The automatic maintenance of a constant voltage is not new and has occupied the minds of electrical engineers for over fifty years.

This subject now covers an extremely large field and one which is continually expanding. The title AUTOMATIC VOLTAGE REGULATORS AND STABILISERS has been taken in its broadest sense, covering any device designed to maintain automatically a constant, or pre-determined, voltage at some point. The field of application is large and extends from the use of apparatus for the maintenance of constant voltage on large power systems to the maintenance of constant voltage in small electronic appliances.

The general principles of operation of automatic voltage regulators are similar whatever the size and type. I have tried to keep these fundamental principles in mind throughout the book, rather than deal with a voltage regulator for a particular purpose as an isolated unit.

The book is divided into roughly three sections: a section dealing with the fundamental principles and applying to all types of regulator, a section dealing with regulators having mechanical moving parts (termed electro-mechanical and a section dealing with regulators having no mechanical moving parts, being composed purely of electric and electronic circuits.
