The hero is Adrian Sherd, a teenage boy isolated in an Australian suburb in the 1950s – in the last years before television and the family car changed suburbia forever. Adrian is no stereotyped young rebel; he dreams earnest, elaborate preposterous dreams. He dreams of orgies with American film stars, of marrying his Catholic sweetheart, teaching her the facts of life during their honeymoon, and fathering eleven children by her; he even dreams a complete history of the world as a chronicle of sexual frustration.
